Today I’m grateful for all my wonderful, inspiring female friends. I’ve just had one of my old and dear friends, Kate, come and stay with me in Bali for the past few weeks. I’ve got lots of beautiful friends I’ve made along the way in my Bali chapter but the tried and true friendships like Kate, that stretch back some 20 odd years are irreplaceable and so special.
There is something wonderful about being able to be your armour free self – raw, exposed, defects and all and to know you are accepted, loved and understood! The ease, the laughter, the support and advice and how these life long friendships shape the person you become are one of life’s greatest gifs. Friendships shape who we are and who we are yet to be. This can be especially so when we hit those life rapids, they soothe our monkey minds worry, fill the emotional gaps in our relationships, and help us remember and validate who we really are. Having gone through a tough few months with a relationship breakup recently, having Kate here and a short visit back to see my old dear friends in NZ, was pure tonic for my soul.
Women are such a source of strength to each other. We nurture one another. And we need to have unpressured space in which we those special kind of conversations that women do when they’re with other women. It’s a very healing experience as witnessed each week amongst the wonderful women who stay with us on retreat.
In one of our recent retreats I had the privilege of hosting 8 wonderful women who were celebrating their 50th birthday’s with us in Bali. Having met in UK in medical school some 32 years earlier, their paths had led them to create lives in all corners of the globe. It was wonderful seeing them come back together after so many years and the life long bonds that still existed, the easy laughter, support and nurturing that came so naturally. I have the most beautiful image of saying goodbye to them on the farewell night and turning back and seeing them dancing away to the song Baby Love, hugging, crying and laughing – reveling in the end of their week long holiday and the precious time they were reunited.
I love how every friendship has the power to change you in subtle ways, but it is our truest friends that can really shape the course of our lives and influence us to become better people. Living in Bali now I don’t see my childhood friends as much as I’d like but when I do, it’s a precious gift. I cherish my limited time with them making me realise time and again how grateful I am to have these women in my life that gave me the support and courage to chase my Surf Haven dream and will be there for many more decades to come!
