After a wonderful weekend back in Bali after alot of recent travel, I was longing for one thing – to see one of those magical beautiful Balinese sunsets where the world seems to stand still and everyone gazes at nature closing another day in spectacular style.
It’s the time of day when the beach truly comes alive – beach sellers showcasing their wares with great sales pitches like I make you special price – BEST sunset price for you lady, people walking all kinds of weird and wonderful dogs, groups doing yoga and meditation with ocean breeze dancing around them, others ‘dance walking’ – an unusual craze to have hit Bali shores where people dance and walk at the same time listening to their ipods (there are now groups all around Bali), horses cantering through the white wash with dogs (including mine) cheekily chasing their tails, surfers catching their last waves of the day whilst the sky turns their ocean pink, and many people dotted along the beach watching it in awe with sun kissed smiling faces and often a cold Bintang in hand. I guess this is our Champs-Élysées equivalent!
It’s fair to say that sunset time is a daily ritual here in Bali and it feels a crime to miss one. This weekend as I was watching my second since returning, I remembered what a Balinese friend told me of the significance of a sunset which was marking the celebration of the day, a way of slowing down and stopping to give gratitude for this wonderful life we have been gifted. Nice.
