Renee Tanner – ‘Arts and Culture Champion’

Renee was nominated by a friend, Loren Barton

Renne works tirelessly to promote the arts and culture in New Zealand. She keeps a demanding schedule reaching out to all parts of Auckland as well as the country. She inspires those around her to action and is a huge proponent of people coming together to share, create, experience, and celebrate art. She is a caring and compassionate person with a deep dedication to improving the community.  With all that she does for the people of Auckland (and New Zealand), she could really use this week to rejuvenate and relax. Thank you for your consideration.

Did you think you were this much of an inspiration to this person in your life?

I was surprised, delighted & flattered to be nominated by Loren Barton; perhaps it takes someone who is one step removed from your daily life & work, to see you in this light?

How does the person who nominated you affect your life?

I’m inspired by Loren’s dedication. He travels the world, as the ‘lighting guy’ for artists such as Beyonce. I always look forward to chatting to him – Loren lights up my life!  We lead different lives – my art projects and outdoor adventures, contrast to his latest big city locations and extravagant stage set ups. But our insights into each other bring us closer.

Explain in your own words what you do that is an inspiration. Try not to be modest!

I help bring creative people’s ideas to life! Last year I launched a crowdfunding website in New Zealand, exclusively for getting creative projects off the ground. I ran art education programme for Auckland. One of our projects was to establish a community garden in a disadvantaged area, and a youth art award. I promoted a range of charity art auctions to support Greenpeace, the Auckland City Mission and Christchurch Earthquake Relief Fund. I’m currently working at Auckland Council to ensure art & culture is integrated into the everyday lives of Aucklanders.

Why do you do what you do? What drives you?

I’m inspired by the way the arts enhance our lives, as individuals and society as a whole. Culture is what makes us rich!

What are your core values?

Respect, Appreciation, Love.

When was the last time you did something for yourself?

I love nature, and I’m so lucky to live in New Zealand. I went away for a weekend to beautiful native forest, and hiked to the top of a ‘little’ mountain. The forest is two hours away, but it could be a million years . .

Outline your perfect ‘me time’. A hot bath with candles? Or perhaps just a walk by yourself to reflect?

I’ve always loved running and that’s my best ‘me time’. I feel clear and connected to myself, as it washes away a busy day.  My ultimate is to a run to the beach and then dive into the water – I can’t stop smiling & feeling grateful in these moments.

What inspires you in day-to-day life?

Positive & inspiring people, places and actions.

Which of the prize excites you most? Is it learning a new activity? Or maybe you are looking forward to having meals cooked for you!

Surfing in paradise!
