Five easy yoga poses to ease back pain and open your heart

If you find yourself hunching over a desk for the better part of your day, you might have noticed minor or even major back pain creeping into your life, however finding time to practice yoga in the modern world is a growing problem which needs to be solved.

Here are five easy yoga positions that will ease back pain and open your heart, for beginners and advanced yogis alike from our Retreat Manager and expert yogini, Rachel. She outlines how each yoga pose will help you in a variety of ways for many purposes!

1) Child’s pose (Balasana)

• Gently stretches hips, thighs and ankles
• Calms the brain and helps relieve stress and fatigue
• Calming and restorative
• Main focus is thighs but also good at releasing back, shoulders, neck
and hips
• Normalises circulation through the body
• Relieves back and neck pain is back and neck are supported
• Encourages strong and steady breathing
• Calms mind and body

2) Legs up wall (Viparita karani)

• Alleviates headaches
• Boosts energy
• Restorative and relaxing gentle inversion
• Eases anxiety and stress
• Therapeutic for arteritis, headaches, high blood pressure and insomnia
• Relieves lower back pain
• Eases symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, menstrual cramps and
menopause
• Relieves tired or cramped feet and legs

3) Puppy pose or heart melting pose (Uttana Shishosana)

• Calms mind and invigorates body
• Relieves symptoms of chronic stress, tension and insomnia
• Relieves tension in upper arms, shoulder and neck
• Expands your chest
• Improves flexibility in the spine
• Stretches out abdominals
• Stimulates back muscles
• Opens hips and stretches hamstrings

4) Corpse pose (Savasana)

• The ultimate relaxation pose
• Calms the brain and helps relieve stress and mild depression
• Relaxes the body, reduces headache, fatigue and insomnia
• Helps lower blood pressure
