What Surfing Teaches You About Life
If you’re thinking about learning to surf, thinking of attending a surf retreat, or you’re already a fan of the waves you shouldn’t underestimate the changes that getting in the water will bring to your life. The effects are not only far-reaching but super positive. You’ll find yourself learning a whole repertoire of new skills that you can use when you’re in and out of the water! Most women have no idea that something as fun and exhilarating as surfing is not just fun, but will enhance their lives far beyond a morning surf adventure.
From surfing over the years whilst living here and running Surf Retreats in Bali, I have come to understand that surfing teaches me so many things about life. I wanted to share my top 7 lessons with you.
1. Believe in yourself
The ability to walk confidently out onto the beach in your swimmers (or togs for kiwis!), wade into the ocean and give it a crack gives you self-confidence beyond measure! I love how surfers are all shapes and sizes and the fastest growing segment of surfers is now women in their 30’s and 40’s – that diversity in the water is awesome to see. So much rides on mindset whether you will have a great surf session or not. Ultimately what you believe you can do, you will do. So back yourself when you step into the water and be open to having fun. After all the best surfer is the one having the most fun out there!
Surfing teaches you that courage is not about NOT being scared, but feeling your feelings and doing it anyway! When you surf, you’ll learn to constantly push yourself beyond your limits. Whether it’s taking on a new surf spot or getting back on the board after a big wipeout and this skill is invaluable throughout life.
Surf conditions are constantly changing and every set of waves is different so learning to apply your skills in a variety of situations is important. You’ll instinctively learn how to spot change when you’re on your board and adjust yourself based upon those changes. Being flexible and finding your flow is so important both in and out of the water.
Surfing is an incredible practice of active meditation – if you are not practicing mindfulness, you’ll fall off the board right!. You’ll find yourself releasing the stress of everyday life and remembering what’s important to you by truly embracing the moment. Learning the art of living in the here and now will bring happiness and so much freedom to all aspects of your life.
We all need patience and surfing is one way to learn it over and over. You’ll learn to wait for the right waves and be patient with yourself when you sometimes miss them! But let us reassure you, the feeling when the wave lifts you up is well worth the wait.
6. Humility – how to truly surrender
If you’re reading this, you’re probably already an ocean lover. But surfing will teach you more than you realise. The ocean is a beautiful beast that can never be harnessed, but by recognising your powerlessness you can learn to let it carry you. Become a surfer and you’ll find yourself more able to go with the flow than ever before AND more right sized about your place in the world.
We’re not going to tell you that developing resilience is easy, but it is so worthwhile and surfing will give you a master class on this. There are going to be times when you feel disheartened, but you’ll learn to pick yourself up and try again. The more times you get back on the board, the stronger your resilience muscle will grow. This will permeate other areas of your life that also call on your resilience. After all it’s not what happens to us that defines us, yet what we choose to do after the fact.
