Twelve Ways To Heal Yourself After a Health Crisis

We see so many women at our luxury retreat in Bali that come for some precious time out. Perhaps they are at a point in their lives when they need to heal, take their energy back and just stop the big treadmill of their lives. Our Bali Retreat team often discuss some of our tried and true methods for getting your mojo back. Here is our top 12.

  1. REST AND THEN GO TO THE WATER

“When an animal in the wild has been injured, it has only two strategies for how to heal itself: It can rest, or it can go to the water. So if you’re in pain right now, try to do as much of both as possible.”

Rest.

And then go to the water.
Drink the water. Submerge yourself in the water. Touch the water. Look at the water.
Then go back to sleep.
Repeat as necessary, until healing occurs.

Sometimes I forget these two magical principals – how to rest, and how to go to the water. Then I get overwhelmed by life’s challenges, and I trick myself into believing that I need a much more complicated cure than your average wounded animal. And yes, sometimes, more complicated cures are in order, but usually, sleep and water will do the trick.

Thinking about healing I’m reminded of that Isak Dinesen quote:

“The cure for everything is salt water: tears, sweat, or the sea.”

It’s why we originally started 9 years ago with a Bali Surf Retreat as I knew how healing the ocean was. It’s quite amazing seeing the transformation in guests after a week of trying something new and learning to surf.  Sunkissed with salt water on their skin and smiles from ear to ear!

That said, when the ocean isn’t available, a long hot bath will work. Or a cold shower. Or standing under the garden sprinkler, which has been known to change the energy of a day, as well! As a final resort: Just drink 8 glasses of the stuff…whatever it takes! Get thee to water, ladies.

  1. ACCEPT AND EMBRACE REALITY

Accept and embrace where you are  – or it could also be phrased “Surrender to where you are at.” When you come to terms with the new reality you will heal more quickly. It may be that you are weaker, less able to do what you used to do but embrace it. Love yourself exactly as you are right now and work gently with what you have.

  1. ASK FOR HELP AND THEN ASK AGAIN

You can decide to get back to business but please promise me this, do it under new management. Ask for help to implement the life changes you will need – then ask again. Never be shy to pull your community closer. Make a connection with the healers in your life, use your intuition and draw in the help that you feel you need without fear of seeming burdensome.

  1. TAKE IT ONE DAY AT A TIME

Take this journey slowly. Be the turtle, not the hare. Don’t try to use your ‘doing’ self to launch straight into everything at full speed. Connect with your ‘being’ self and map out a gentle plan to make one change at a time. When you lower your expectations, your body will rise to the challenge.

  1. CONNECT THE BODY & THE MIND

Find yourself a form of mindful practice that works for you. Science has long proved that the mind and body are connected, so a meditation routine that soothes the mind can also help you to bring healing to your physical self. Discover our yoga and meditation programmes here.

  1. GATHER YOUR TRIBE AROUND YOU

Reach out to the ones who make you laugh and the ones you can shed unashamed tears with.  Connect with those friends and be honest. Eat, drink or just sit together and you’ll find that your shared laughter is a magic balm on your soul. At our yoga retreat, we find women’s circles very powerful for this. Never underestimate the power of the sisterhood. If you don’t have a close community around you, seek one through a shared hobby, a yoga class or go on retreat and be amongst like minded souls.

  1.  SEEK OUT THE SILVER LINING

At times of illness it’s easy to get lost in worry or negative thinking so take your pen and begin a gratitude diary – seek the silver lining and the sky will seem so much clearer.  

  1. LET HEALING HANDS WORK MAGIC

If your body is hurting than enrol the experts to help release any tension in your muscles and fascia system. Whether it’s a cranial osteopath, a masseuse or another type of bodyworker.  Put yourself in the healing hands of a professional and you’ll find the emotional and psychological release could be just as powerful as the physical one. We have a range of healing treatments on offer at our Bali retreat for this exact purpose. The results of a week of healing modalities, is amazing.

  1. FOOD IS MEDICINE

It’s possible that a change of diet could help your body recover so identify any allergies and see a nutritionist for a new food plan. They may suggest cleansing so be open to the idea of juice fasting or other cleansing diets that can reboot your immune system. Each time before I got pregnant I sought help from my ayurvedic dr and did a cleanse. I got pregnant naturally, immediately on both occasions (at 42 and 44 years of age). It’s remarkable what the right food can do to your system.

  1. TRY KEEPING IT NATURAL

I’ve experienced great success with Ayurvedic treatments and supplements so I can highly recommend seeing an Ayurvedic healer for an analysis and treatment plan. It’s why we launched our ayurvedia healing centre. 

  1. CONNECT WITH YOUR CREATIVE NATURE

Put down the logical brain and start a creative project. There’s no need to pressure yourself into creating a masterpiece either! Just do something that brings simple pleasure or allows you to do service for others

  1. GENTLE MOVEMENT

There’s no need to throw yourself back into a CrossFit class but try some gentle exercise.  Try devising a new routine where you can connect with the breath and get moving again, especially if you’ve been restricted. Maybe it’s a yoga class, maybe it’s swimming in the ocean.
