Why Spa Treatments Are a Necessity, Not a Luxury

Spa treatments

By far one of the highlights for our guests on their luxury Bali retreat is the spa treatments. A spa pampering is one of the loveliest experiences that we can treat ourselves to. Often, we may not allow ourselves such an indulgence on a regular basis. However studies have shown that spa treatments are not only highly enjoyable, they are also highly beneficial in more ways that you may have imagined.

Spa treatments actually date back very far in the history of human civilisation, with traditional communities building hammams, bathhouses, saunas, and other facilities that served the purpose of bathing, but were also utilised for their relaxation and beautifying properties. These days, of course, the experience of visiting a spa is very different! Yet the physical, mental and emotional benefits are still similar.

Whether you’re surrendering to a massage at the end of a busy week, getting a facial before a big night out, or squeezing a manicure into your lunch break, let’s look at some of the main reasons why you should indulge in a little more pampering time!

Relaxation and Stress Reduction

Spa treatments may just be one of the most effective (and enjoyable!) ways to relieve stress and find absolute relaxation. It offers you the perfect opportunity to disconnect from all the hustle and bustle of day to day life and cocoon yourself in a little sanctuary of bliss! This special time to yourself allows you to let go, clear your mind, and allow yourself to simply relax in the good hands of your therapist. Massage treatments are particularly good at removing tension from your muscles and limbs and relieving aches and pains that are often held in the physical body as a response to stress. The entire environment is conducive to stress reduction- from the tranquil ambiance, to the mood lighting, to the lovely aromas and the gentle music- all your senses are invited to enjoy and surrender to the experience.

Boost your Mood

Spa treatments in their very nature are an experience that we look forward to with anticipation. The reduction in stress (both physical and mental), and plus the sheer feel-good factor of spa treatments leaves us feeling lighter, brighter and more in control of our emotions. A spa treatment is a little like switching off and then switching back on again! The pampering allows that important opportunity to recalibrate and we step back into the world feeling nourished and pampered, but also with newfound energy and clarity.  Massage, in particular, is known to release serotonin, which is the hormone associated with happiness. Studies have shown that you can reap the benefits of this mood boost for 3-4 days following your treatment! On a physical level, treatments such as facials, manicures, body scrubs, and hair masks all help to improve our physical appearance, helping us to feel good from the outside in, as well as from the inside out!

For centuries, spa therapies have been utilised to help slow down the ageing process and leave us feeling more youthful and radiant. Treatments such as facials are known to stimulate the skin cells, hydrate the skin, prevent the onset or appearance of fine lines and balance out skin tone. Body scrubs and massages also utilise wonderful ingredients with special herbs and oils that are deeply nourishing and support glowing vibrant skin. Even the stress-reducing benefits of spa treatments can assist with anti-ageing as stress is one of the leading factors in premature ageing. Giving your body the opportunity to deeply rest and rejuvenate helps you to look and feel your best.

Radiant Skin

As previously mentioned, spa treatments and beauty therapies help to leave the skin robust and enlivened. Pollution, lack of sleep, poor diet, environmental factors and the natural process of ageing can leave the skin appearing tired, dull and lacklustre. Facials help to detoxify, nourish and thoroughly revitalise your skin and help to even skin tone. They help to reduce puffiness, stimulate skin cell regeneration and encourage circulation in the face. Full body treatments such as scrubs, wraps and massages also add new life to dull skin leaving your whole body feeling smooth and luscious.

Improved Sleep

Studies show that 1 in 5 people are not getting an adequate amount of sleep. For women, changes in hormones and stress are the leading factors when it comes to not catching enough Zzzz’s. Spa treatments can help to both regulate sleep patterns and improve sleep quality. Massages work to completely relax your muscles, lower your blood pressure and help maintain a healthy heart rate- all of which are conducive to a deeper night’s sleep. In fact, many people actually fall asleep right on the massage table which is a true testament to the relaxing nature of massage and its positive effects on sleep!

Assist Aches and Pains

Today’s modern lifestyle tends to promote a wide range of aches and pains in the body. You may work too many hours sitting down, or too many hours standing in the same place. Perhaps you don’t get enough exercise, carry an old injury, sleep on an unsupportive mattress or spend a lot of time doing repetitive actions that in the long term cause a negative effect on the body. The various types of massage available can all assist in supporting a pain-free body. A relaxing oil massage can be perfect to soothe muscles and alleviate tension, while deep tissue massages and more focused treatments can work on targeting specific problem areas in the body. Hot Stone Massages, Deep Tissue Massage and Lymphatic Drainage Massage are all helpful for treating those niggling aches and pains. Treatments such as head massages and hand massages can also decrease the frequency of headaches by relieving the tension that often causes headaches in the first place.

Support Weight Loss and Detoxification

Many studies around the world have supported the relationship between spa treatments and weight loss. Hot spa treatments open up the skin’s pores, help the body to ward off toxins, and also encourage the body to burn calories. Spa treatments can help the body to re-energise by cleansing your system and regenerating new blood back into your body, specifically targeting the liver, kidneys, lungs and skin. Deep tissue massages can help the body to break down fatty deposits through the pressure and specific movements performed by the therapist. Lymphatic Drainage massage is a popular treatment with great detoxifying benefits, working to rid the body of unwanted stored toxins. Lymphatic massage can also help reshape your body and acts as a diuretic to help rid your body of excess held fluid. Specific slimming massage also work to encourage the removal of excess weight, and also

reduce cellulite, eliminate toxins, and help to reduce the visibility of stretch marks. Furthermore, spa treatments often use active ingredients such as coffee, cacao and green tea which all have stimulating properties that support detox and weight loss.

Improve Blood Flow and Circulation

When it comes to spa treatments, one of the most notable benefits of massage is that they regulate your blood pressure and also improve your blood circulation. This has many advantageous effects to your overall wellbeing and also works preventatively to boost the body’s immune function and ward off illness and disease.  As well as helping your muscles relax, certain types of massage can help to boost circulation to the extremities which also helps to ease the fatigue and aches that come with excess lactic acid. Massages also speed up the body’s natural healing abilities and improve overall bodily function.

Prevention and Longevity

Clearly, scientific research supports the benefits that come along with the bliss that spa treatments offer. One recent study done on participants from a week-long retreat that incorporated daily spa treatments showed that guests saw an average 7.7 percent drop in blood pressure, a decrease in cholesterol, mercury and sodium levels, and a marked decrease in 12 different chemicals associated with cholesterol and type 2 diabetes. Another study found that regular massage therapy of any kind seems to reduce inflammation and increase cell growth in skeletal muscles, and that participants all showed better cardiovascular health, reduced stress, and a healthier immune system. Having regular spa treatments is not only good for your body and soul, but can help you to live a long and healthy life.

It’s easy to forget that our body needs pampering and oftentimes, we feel a sense of guilt when it comes to allowing ourselves that massage, facial or body scrub. The experience of being in a spa environment alone has proven to be beneficial for our wellbeing. There is much we can learn from allowing ourselves the time to relax, unwind, and enjoy a spa treatment. Being away from our phones and emails, away from the hustle of daily life, and in the hands of someone who cares about your wellbeing is a very therapeutic and special experience – and that is before the treatment even begins!

Thank you for telling me that regularly going to the spa can help me get the vibrant skin I’ve always wanted. My sister encouraged me to try going to the hot tub swim spa that she had seen online, but I initially said no because of my schedule. Still, seeing that I’ll be able to experience a lot of skin benefits, it might be better to call her now and tell her I’ll be going.
