Our Top 8 Simple Wellness Hacks

These days the idea or concept of wellness is vast. Information overload can make wellness feel intimidating and sifting through the noise can be time-consuming and overwhelming, to say the least! Luckily, the most potent wellness hacks are easy and straightforward- eating natural foods, breathing fresh clean air, moving our bodies, spending time with people we love and finding ways to relax.

While these simple forms of wellness will always be paramount, in an age of constant innovation, we have unprecedented access to new, cutting edge information and technology that can help us take our wellness to the ‘next level.’

Last week I was lucky enough to attend the Global Wellness Summit. Over the course of three days, I attended incredible lectures offered by the leading global health experts of our time. To say I was inspired would be an understatement! I was riveted. I took as many notes as I could manage on new wellness innovations that not only assist us all on our journey to health but can do so with ease. It gave me so many new ideas on what we could also offer and implement on our luxury Bali retreat.

I wanted to share with you my 8 top wellness hacks from the summit that you can utilise in your own life. These don’t take a great deal of time, money or expert know-how. Some of these hacks use age-old wisdom, while some of them use cutting edge scientific discoveries. All of them have the power to uplevel your health in exciting ways.

One of my key takeaways from the summit was that 70% of all disease is preventable. 70%!  We are incredibly capable of nourishing and healing our bodies. In fact, our body is naturally self-healing and regenerative, all we need to do is support it in its quest to thrive. These wellness hacks do exactly that. We understand that you can’t always escape on a Bali retreat, but there are always ways you can support your wellbeing and thrive.

Top 8 Simple Wellness Hacks

  1. Sound Healing & Frequencies

Sound Healing is a practice that uses vibrations via voice or instruments such as gongs, singing bowls, and tuning forks, in order to relax the mind and body and create a deep sense of well-being. It has actually been used by cultures like the Australian Aboriginals and Tibetan Monks for centuries. Sound healing is now being used as a powerful healing modality to treat a number of conditions including anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, dementia, autism, and behavioral disorders. It can also help to lower stress, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels, assist with pain management, improve sleep, lower inflammation and balance mood. Studies have shown that you can actually use different sound frequencies to “hack” your brainwaves and promote physical healing. By using specific rhythms and frequencies, you can downshift your brain from the beta state (normal consciousness) to the theta state (relaxed consciousness) and even the delta state (where internal healing can occur). The human body has its own natural resonance or frequency, and vibrational medicine is based on the idea that disease is a result of those natural resonances getting out of tune – whether due to stress, illness or environmental factors. Sound therapy works powerfully, in a gentle and unobtrusive way, to return the body’s own vibration to its natural state. Sound healing is becoming more popular – try a google search to find sound healing near you, or even try Youtube for many free sound healing tracks. If you are in Bali, you must check out the sessions at The Pyramids of Chi. This is a place we love to recommend to guests who visit on their Bali yoga retreat.

  1. Flower Essences

Flower essences are liquid extracts that are part of an emerging field of subtle energy medicine, which also includes homeopathy, acupuncture, color therapy, and similar modalities. Flower essences work on the premise that every flower has a particular healing attribute in the form of a vibrational frequency. The essences are made by infusing the flower’s particular vibration into water and then stabilizing it and diluting it further. They can be used to address profound issues of emotional well-being, soul development, and mind-body health. They do not work bio-chemically like aspirin does for a headache, instead, they impact the subtle energy fields of the soul to affect physical well-being. Flower essences can be used in hundreds of ways. A few examples include boosting creativity, overcoming grief, reconnecting with a deeper spiritual self,  healing anxiety or depression, healing trauma, boosting self-love and confidence, assisting with communication, boosting sexuality, balancing moods and so much more. Always ensure you use a high grade essence and do not ingest any essences without professional advice. Try Doterra or Australian Bush Flower Essences.

  1. Supplements & Fisetin

When it comes to supplements, you may think of Vitamin C or Zinc- common vitamins and minerals that we tend to supplement if we find out we have a deficiency, or even for prevention. There is however an incredible range of supplements that use new scientific research to dive much deeper below the surface. One supplement that I was amazed to hear about at the Summit was Fisetin. Fisetin is a special antioxidant found in many common fruits and vegetables (strawberries, apples, persimmons, onions to name a few), that’s particularly good for slowing down aging. Recent research found that eating fisetin regularly can increase lifespan by about 10 percent. Fisetin can also help to lower and prevent inflammation in the body and also shows great promise in fighting cancer cells.

  1. Get your Zzzz’s

While sleep may not seem like a wellness hack, it is far and beyond one of the most important things when it comes to your wellbeing. Lack of sleep doesn’t just leave us feeling lethargic and groggy, it can affect our mood, hormones, stress, immune system, obesity levels and the likelihood of developing heart disease, high blood pressure, and other chronic diseases. Sleep is when our body rests and repairs, so it makes sense that if you are consistently missing this healing period, your body is bound to suffer. At our luxury Bali retreat we know sleep is such a huge priority for guests and so important for good health and happiness. Our recent blog explores all the dangers of sleep deprivation plus provides you with all the tips you need to slip into a peaceful slumber every single night.

  1. Timeshifter – Jet Lag App

I travel a lot, and while I feel very fortunate to do so when you run a business and have a family, suffering from jetlag isn’t something you want to have to worry about all the time! Time is precious, and losing a few days or up to a week trying to adjust to a new time zone can be frustrating and debilitating. On retreat, we often have guests that have traveled up to 72 hours to join us in Bali! On a 6 night retreat, you certainly don’t want to waste any precious moments waiting for your body to catch up! I was amazed to hear about this new app called Time Shifter. Timeshifter allows you to create your own personalized jet lag plans so you can arrive at your destination feeling your best. The app works on the premise that each traveler and trip is different and requires a personalized approach, taking your sleep pattern, itinerary, and a range of personal preferences into account. The app has revolutionised people’s lives from astronauts to elite athletes to regular travellers. This is one hack I’m going to test for myself and you may want to also, especially if you are joining us for a Bali wellness retreat!

  1. Find Your Path to Zen

Slow is the new hustle. There are many activities and ways to slow down and find inner tranquility, and this is becoming ever so important in modern life. The trick is to find a practice that allows you to tap into the greater energy frequency and help you to find more calmness, happiness, and clarity. We are all different and unique, so what works for one person may not have the same effect on another. Typical tools to find peace include meditation, yoga, mindful walking, being in nature, music, painting or other forms of mindful movement. Speaking of apps, there are many mindfulness apps available that are designed to help you disconnect and surrender. Try Insight Timer for a great selection of guided meditations or Head Space for a range for exercises to help you with mindfulness and stress reduction.

  1. Forest Bathing

You may have heard of Forest Bathing before as it has become quite the wellness trend this year. While the name may sound a little eccentric, the premise is very simple- spend more time in nature. The name actually comes from the word shinrin-yoku. Shinrin in Japanese means “forest,” and yoku means “bath.” So shinrin-yoku means bathing in the forest atmosphere or taking in the forest through your senses. The goal of forest bathing is to be in the present moment while immersing your senses in the sights and sounds of a natural setting. Studies have confirmed that spending time within a forest or other natural setting can reduce psychological stress and depressive symptoms, while at the same time improving sleep and increasing both vigor and feelings of joy and liveliness. You would already be familiar with the wonderful feelings that come with spending time in nature. This is a simple wellness hack that truly has extraordinary benefits, especially in a world that spends so much time indoors and attached to screens. If you don’t live near a forest don’t despair – find some gardens nearby, take off your shoes and walk through them regularly. By immersing yourself in nature and being present as you do, you will reap the benefits. Walking barefoot is a great practice known as grounding, so by doing this with no shoes you will be an even greater benefit.  We recently did a blog post on the healing benefits of the ocean too which was inspired by our Bali surf and yoga retreat and is similar in many ways to Forest Bathing.

  1. Biometrics & Viome

Sometimes we can try every single health product, supplement and treatment under the sun but still not feel quite right or succeed in alleviating a niggling health issue. Perhaps you are struggling to lose weight, suffering from insomnia, have an irritable gut, or simply lacking mental clarity or energy. All too often we put up with feeling a certain way that we come to regard as ‘normal’ when in fact, discovering the root cause of your health issue can help you to find a level of wellbeing you forgot was possible. At the conference, I learned about Viome which is a simple online test that takes the guesswork out of eating right with a science-based at-home microbiome test. The test identifies your unique living microorganisms and provides you with personalised nutrition recommendations that help you optimize your gut health. We are all incredibly unique and while you may be eating a very healthy diet, it may not be the right diet for your unique makeup. Optimising the activity of your gut can dramatically improve the condition of your health in a vast array of ways. Find out more here.
