Whether you have been on a Bali wellness retreat before, or even just a healthy weekend escape, you know how great you feel at the end of your time away. Friends and co-workers comment on your glowing skin and shining eyes. You have a spring in your step. The less-than-healthy things that tempted you a mere week ago are no longer in your line of vision. You have boundless energy, zero stress, no bags under your eyes and none of your usual aches or pains! You feel like a new person and assume that this is the new improved you. Right?! Fast forward a week and your day-to-day life has swallowed you up again, leaving you feeling a little less sparkly…

It is easy to feel your best self on a Bali retreat and also immediately following your retreat. It’s easy to be healthy and happy when you’re healthy and happy. You have just spent a week in a beautiful and inspiring environment around supportive women. These are simple tips that anyone can do and don’t rely on an extravagant amount of time, money or resources. Intrigued?! Let’s explore them.

Go Crazy with Phytochemicals

Don’t worry, we are not recommending anything nasty or illegal here! Phytochemicals are literally plant (phyto) chemicals: compounds in plants (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes) that contribute to their colour, taste, and smell. Scientists estimate there are more than 5,000 phytochemicals, and each one has unique benefits for our wellbeing. For example, carotenoids in red, orange, yellow, and green plants (cooked tomatoes, carrots, squash, and broccoli) may inhibit cancer growth and cardiovascular disease. Flavonoids in berries, apples, citrus and coffee may fight inflammation and tumor growth. This is why it is always recommended to ‘eat the rainbow’ so you can access many different phytochemicals.

On our Bali retreat, our delicious meals are indeed a feast for all the senses. Dishes combine a vast array of colours and flavours and incorporate a great deal of fresh, plant-based options. In Bali we are lucky to have access to wonderful local fruits and vegetables that make eating the rainbow easy and delicious (hello dragonfruit!) At home, discover your own local fruits and vegetables and eat seasonally to ensure freshness and flavour. Try and aim to enjoy five servings of fruit and nine servings of vegetables each day and mix things up to make sure you’re getting all of these fabulous phytochemicals.

Say Hello to Glowing Skin with Dry Brushing

At home it is often unrealistic to have an indulgent body scrub every week! However, this doesn’t mean that your skin needs to be neglected. Dry Brushing is an easy and effective way to nourish your skin; all you need is a dry brush (found in most chemists or health stores) and five minutes a day before you jump in the shower. The technique is exactly what it sounds: you use the dry brush to brush your skin in order to remove the build up of dead skin cells. Simply glide the body brush over dry skin using gentle pressure and long, sweeping motions, moving toward the heart. Once done, you can jump in the shower as normal and enjoy the benefits of your smooth glowing skin! Dry brushing has a tremendous amount of benefits. With the skin being our largest organ, it is excellent for detoxification and for the lymphatic system, and can also help reduce cellulite and even boost your energy (which is why its best done in the morning and not prior to bed!) Once a week is sufficient to help you reap the rewards of this easy technique.

Meet Your New Massage Therapist: You!

Daily or even unlimited massage is an important element of all of our Bali wellness retreats and are a massive contributing factor to our guests feeling thoroughly replenished, renewed and revitalised. There is nothing quite like the healing benefits of a massage. At home, it can be hard to find time to get to the spa on a regular basis, and it is also quite expensive in the western world to enjoy frequent massages. Great news though: you possess two wonderful hands that are capable of wonderful self-massage! Self-massage can be a really lovely way for you to nourish your skin, de-stress and also connect to yourself in a nurturing way. All you need is some lovely oil (sesame or coconut work great) and five or ten minutes to gently massage the oil into your skin and over your body. While this may feel uncomfortable at first, it is a beautiful practice that is as good for your physical body as it is for your emotional wellbeing. This can be lovely after a bath, before bed, or anytime you feel like you need a little extra pampering.

Get Familiar with Foam Rolling

Foam rolling is an extremely beneficial way to help the body recover after physical activity, and stay healthy overall. Foam rollers target not only our muscles, but also our deep connective tissues like our tendons, ligaments and fascia, and can help to ease pain in the body, restore a full range of motion, release tightness, improve flexibility and so much more. Foam rollers are an inexpensive and versatile piece of equipment that you can use at home any time you have a spare few minutes, or even when you are watching Netflix! You can find these in sports shops, some yoga studios, or easily order online. There are lots of articles or videos that you can watch to help you find simple techniques to use the foam rollers in ways that work for you and address your needs. Using a foam roller is essentially an affordable way to give yourself a deep tissue massage. Foam rollers work by using the body’s natural response to pressure. As you roll over tight spots or trigger points, the muscle relaxes. This easy technique only needs to be done for a few minutes each day and is perfect after a long day at the office, or a gruelling workout to address any muscle tension. They can also be used as a yoga prop and are easy to travel with. These nifty little pieces of equipment will become your best friend when it comes to feeling limber, mobile and pain-free!

Switch It Off!

Did you know that your devices have a little switch that turns them off?! Amazing! Give yourself permission to turn your devices off or schedule in time where you disconnect. On retreat we find that one of the most beneficial things is when people take time away from their phones and computers. We are used to living in an age where we are constantly connected. However, all this tends to do is make us stressed, it disconnects us from the real world, it even disconnects us from the people we love, even though it is meant to do the opposite! Time on social media can lower our self-esteem and literally eat away time that could be better spent otherwise. Time on devices can also affect our sleep and levels of clarity, energy and concentration. Schedule in times throughout your day where you can switch off in order to switch back to yourself or the people or things in your life that truly matter. We are only given a certain amount of hours each day – use them wisely and in ways that support your wellbeing on all levels.
