When I founded Escape Haven more than 15 years ago, I used to write a blog called Grateful Monday every week. Without immediately realizing what effect practicing gratitude would have on my life, I wanted to document everything I’m grateful for.
This was the main result for me: I found myself being able to successfully reach my personal goals with a more rewarding and enjoyable experience (more on this later).
In this article, I’ll take you through what gratitude is, my tried and tested ways to practice gratitude, and the benefits & results of practicing gratitude.

So, What Is Gratitude?
In the simplest of terms, gratitude is when you feel thankful for something good in your life. It’s about recognising and valuing the positive moments, big or small, rather than focusing on what you lack. When you feel gratitude, it’s like shining a light on the good parts of your life, which can help you feel happier and more content.
Imagine your life as a garden. Gratitude is like watering the flowers instead of focusing on the weeds. The more you nurture and appreciate the beautiful blooms, the more your garden thrives. Similarly, when you practice gratitude, you train your mind to notice the positives, making your overall outlook on life brighter and more fulfilling.

How Do I Practice Daily Gratitude?
Practicing gratitude is about shifting your focus to the positive aspects of life and appreciating them fully. It’s a simple habit that can bring more joy and mindfulness to your daily routine. Here are ten actionable ways to start and keep going:
1. Keep a Gratitude Journal
Each day, write down three things you’re thankful for. They can be big or small, like a kind gesture or a beautiful sunrise. Starting with this might feel extremely difficult. However, as time goes on, you’ll realize that with the help of your gratitude journaling, it will become easier and easier to notice the small things in your life for which you can be grateful.
When you experience a difficult time in your life, you can always go back to your gratitude journal to reflect on things you’ve been grateful for when you’re in a spot where it’s really difficult to see the bright side of things. After all, no one’s words will resonate more with you than your own.

2. Say Thank You More Often
Make a habit of expressing appreciation to people who help, support, or brighten your day – It strengthens relationships and spreads positivity. Besides spreading positive emotions, simply saying ‘thank you’ can help with:
- Fewer negative emotions: When waking up, a small change you could make is instead of immediately going to Instagram, you can say “thank you” for even waking up. This will help improve positive feelings throughout the day. For example, after saying thank you for waking up, your mindset will change from “I have to go to work” to “I get to go to work today.”
- Improved mental health: Did you know that expressing gratitude by saying thank you can help with anxiety, depression, and trauma?
- Stronger relationships: While caring for yourself by expressing gratitude, you’re simultaneously strengthening personal relationships as they feel validated and appreciated by you expressing gratitude towards them.
3. Focus on the Present
Pause to notice and enjoy simple moments—like the smell of fresh coffee or the sound of birds chirping. Gratitude grows when we are mindful. Meditation, deep breathing exercises, and actively engaging your senses are easy ways to focus on the present. By focusing on the present, you’ll notice:
- Increased self-awareness: Being present will help you become more aware of your own emotions and reactions, which will help you navigate/ get through your own feelings and show more empathy towards others.
- Improved personal relationships: When you’re not worrying about the next thing, constantly checking your phone, and penciling time in your calendar for time with loved ones, you leave room for people to express their emotions and form a stronger bond with you. After all, who likes to speak to someone while they’re clearly distracted?
- Reduced stress: By being mindful and challenging your thoughts when you’re experiencing excessive worries about the future, you subconsciously realize that everything will be okay. Each day has its own stressors, and worrying about tomorrow doesn’t help, as today brings enough worries of its own. Most of the things we worry about don’t even happen. Effectively, you won’t be carrying an umbrella with you expecting it to rain every day (which it won’t); you’ll be preparing to dance in the rain.
4. Reflect Before Sleeping
At the end of each day, think about one good thing that happened, no matter how small. It’s a peaceful way to end the day on a positive note. Even if you reflect and think of something you could’ve done better, you can still think back and be grateful for the lesson you’ve learned. You’ll notice:
- Turn challenges into lessons: When things go wrong, reflect on what you’ve learned or how the experience has helped you grow. Gratitude can come from tough moments, too.
- Improved decision-making: Reflecting on your decisions of the day can help you identify negative patterns in your own behavior and make better choices in the future.
- Better communication skills: By reflecting on the day, you’ll be able to better understand your emotions, and when you better understand your own emotions, you’ll be able to express yourself more clearly, honestly, and empathetically.
- You’ll gain perspective: Reflecting on the past day can help you gain clarity on different types of situations and avoid tunnel vision.
5. Practice Gratitude During Meals
Before eating, take a moment to appreciate the food, the effort behind it, and the people you’re sharing it with. Besides setting the tone for a relaxing meal, you’ll see the following:
- Reduction of food waste: Being thankful can encourage you to value your meal, making you less likely to waste food. Acknowledging the effort behind your meal—farmers, cooks, or even yourself—makes you more aware of the value of food.
- Promotion of mindful eating: Gratitude helps you slow down and appreciate your food, leading to more intentional and healthier eating habits.
- Improved digestion: Pausing to express gratitude can reduce stress, which helps your body prepare for better digestion.

6. Spend Time in Nature
Nature offers endless things to appreciate, from the rustle of leaves to the vastness of the sky. Take a walk and notice what brings you joy. After doing this, you’ll notice these positive changes:
- Increased creativity: Being in nature is already known to spark creativity, and gratitude increases this by opening your mind to new perspectives and ideas.
- Improved physical well-being: Gratitude in nature often involves physical activity like walking or hiking. This boosts your physical health, improves your mood, and supports better sleep.
- Increased positive emotions: Recognising the gifts of nature, like fresh air or stunning landscapes, can make you feel more content, inspired, and connected to something bigger than yourself.
How Does Gratitude Help You Reach Personal Goals?
Gratitude has played a powerful role in helping a young entrepreneur like me achieve my personal goals by fostering a positive mindset and keeping me focused on what truly matters.
Here’s how it made a difference:
- Clarify what you truly want: When you practice gratitude, you reflect on the things you value most in life. This clarity helps you set goals that align with your core values, making them more meaningful and fulfilling.
- Improved motivation: Gratitude shifts your focus from what you lack (like not enough resources, for example) to what you have (a loving, supportive family, for example). This abundance mindset fuels your drive, making you more inspired and committed to pursuing your goals.
- Builds resilience: Life isn’t always smooth, and setbacks are inevitable. Gratitude strengthens your ability to bounce back by helping you see challenges as opportunities for growth rather than barriers.
- Keeps you present: Being grateful grounds you in the moment. It helps you focus on the progress you’re making instead of constantly worrying about the finish line, making the journey more enjoyable.
- Improves relationships: Achieving personal goals almost always requires support from others. Gratitude fosters stronger connections, as people are drawn to positivity and appreciation, making them more likely to support you.
- Boosts confidence: By recognizing your past successes and the support around you, gratitude builds your self-belief. This confidence empowers you to take on new challenges and pursue bigger goals.
Gratitude isn’t just a feel-good practice; it’s a practical tool that keeps you aligned, motivated, and resilient on your path to achieving what you want in life. It helps you focus on the positives, celebrate the small wins, and maintain the determination to keep going.
