Is Balance… Boring? Why I Changed My Mind About Slowing Down

I have a little confession to make…. I used to think balance was kind of boring.

If you’d asked me a few years ago to take a “recovery day,” I probably would’ve laughed, rolled my eyes, and resumed looking at my computer. Slowing down? Skipping a workout? Saying no to my to-do list? It felt lazy. Wasteful. And honestly… a little dull.

I thought I thrived on the hustle and identified with it in a way. Movement. Momentum. Being productive made me feel like I was achieving something. Rest just felt like standing still.

But lately, something has shifted. I bought a wellness device.

The Wake-Up Call I Didn’t Expect

It all started with a little silver ring—my Oura. (If you have one, you know: it’s like having a tiny wise coach wrapped around your finger 24/7.) One morning, I woke up to the most delightful message from the app:

“Call an architect, your readiness has blasted through the roof!”

It made me laugh—but it also made me think. Because it was right.

For once, I’d actually listened to my body. I’d rested. I’d swapped pushing for pausing. I’d given myself space instead of sprinting toward the next thing. And the results? Better sleep, more energy, a lighter mood, and yes—even more productivity.

That little ring didn’t just congratulate me—it quietly called me out.

Being ‘type A’, with this ring, it made rest and recovery another achievement to pursue! I wanted to ensure I had balanced out my stress and recovery signals daily and experimented with things that allowed me restoration mini breaks.

It gave me such a deep insight into what caused me stress, how I dealt with it, what allows me to regain balance and how I could develop further resilience. What an eye opener!

Recovery went from being ‘this elusive thing’ to being something I could focus on, track and then deeply feel the benefits of a calm nervous system.

It also meant I became even more focused, productive, energised but without the burnout and pace. Things flowed, ease came.

Why So Many of Us Struggle to Slow Down

It made me realise something. So many of the women who come to Escape Haven arrive here in the same state I used to live in:
🔥 Burnt out
😴 Sleep-deprived
🚨 Convinced that rest is a luxury they can’t afford

In fact over 80% of our beautiful guests share that they struggle with sleep.

After a week on retreat something always shifts. Within just a few days in Bali, when they finally allow themselves to slow down and to stop having to look after others, things start to change. Energy returns. Sleep deepens. Minds soften. And the balance they’d written off as “boring”? It becomes something they deeply crave.

Because it turns out—slowing down helps you speed up.

That’s one of the biggest lessons Bali has taught me. And also the one I still have to relearn on a regular basis (hello, type-A tendencies 👋).

Balance Isn’t Passive—It’s Powerful

We all have the same 24 hours. But real productivity, creativity, joy… none of that comes from running on empty.

Balance doesn’t mean doing less. It means doing what matters better—because you’re grounded, rested, and clear.

It’s what allows you to show up fully in your relationships, your career, your workouts, your purpose.

But here’s something important I learned: balance doesn’t happen by accident.

It takes intention.
It takes awareness.

And it takes a willingness to do the opposite of what your busy brain might be telling you. It also really helps when you have something like a wellness device to bring more attention to it.

Lately, I’ve been leaning on my Oura and Garmin more than ever—not just for fitness tracking, but as guides. They help me tune into my rhythm, so I know when it’s time to push and when it’s time to pause. And the more I follow that rhythm? The better I feel. I honestly feel like a better wife, mum, friend and boss.
