What Happens During A Detox Retreat?

The air we breathe in, the food we’re eating, the drinks we’re consuming means we’re exposed to high-level toxins every single day. And while our bodies are designed to detoxify themselves, our bodies are not made to handle this level of toxins. So when our body cannot remove the toxins at a faster rate than we’re exposed to them, we can experience health problems like fatigue, digestive issues, and weight gain.
Of course, there are ways we can help our body’s natural detoxifying process, including nutrition, movement, and detoxing treatments. For a more comprehensive ‘detox’, there’s also the chance to fully commit to the cleansing process through a detox retreat.
A detox retreat is a period of time where you can relax, focus on yourself, and support your body. So, what actually happens during a detox retreat?
What is a detox retreat?
A detox retreat is designed to allow the body to cleanse out toxins and rest, repair, and rejuvenate. Set in a calming environment that is away from distractions and obligations, a detox retreat focuses on activities, such as pilates, yoga, meditation, healing treatments, and a cleansing, plant-based menu.
Detoxing is the process of removing toxins in the body that we consume from food and drinks, the products on our skin, and even from the air we breathe. The most common ways to detox are by juice cleansing, fasting, using herbs, undergoing colon hydrotherapy, and spa treatments, such as scrubs and lymphatic massages. A detox retreat is a chance to fully commit to the detox process without the distractions of work and day to day life.

Benefits of a detox
Benefits of a detox include cleansing our digestive tract, boosting our immunity, helping with weight loss, and renewing our cells (leading to healthier skin, hair, and nails).
Toxicity can accumulate in the body and cells, affecting the digestive system, energy levels, mental clarity, hormonal imbalance, immune system, and weight gain or stagnation. When we allow our digestive system to rest through a detox, such as juicing or eating easily digestible foods, the body can redirect the energy usually taken to digest food to heal and rejuvenate the body’s cells and organs.
What happens during a detox retreat?
Nourishment
The primary theme of a detox retreat is the internal cleanse through naturally detoxifying meals or juices. During our Bali detox retreat, our in-house chef provides six nutrient-dense juices over a three-day juice cleanse, as well as herbal teas, fresh coconuts, and plenty of filtered water. When done correctly, juicing can offer a range of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to enhance the detoxification of the body. On the fourth day of the retreat, you will break your juice cleansing fast.
Detox retreats offer meals for those who choose not to juice, such as chia seed puddings, smoothie bowls, and fresh rice paper rolls. Like our juices, meals are also plant-based and free from dairy, gluten, and refined sugar, supporting the detox and allowing the digestive organs to relax.
Movement
To support your detox journey, a detox retreat generally offers ample opportunity for gentle movement. Movement supports detoxification by getting the blood flowing, sweating out toxins, and stimulating the intestines (helping promote bowel movements). Detox retreats often focus on gentle movement, such as yoga and pilates classes, to promote relaxation in the digestive system and the body. Breathwork and meditation sessions may also be available on detox retreats to further instill a sense of calm.

Classes and Workshops
A detox retreat is not only about removing the toxins internally; it also focuses on detoxing from distractions. You may choose to put your phone away entirely or partially during the retreat to block out distractions and focus solely on your detox journey. While taking time away from your phone, you may choose to get involved in classes and workshops held on the detox retreat. We offer optional cooking classes, breathing workshops, craft workshops, and ceremonies on our retreat.
Spa Treatments
There is an array of spa treatments that support the detoxification of the body, such as lymphatic massages, body scrubs, acupuncture, cupping, colon hydrotherapy, and Ayurvedic massages, such as abhyanga and udvartana. The spa treatments included in a detox retreat are chosen specifically to help cleanse the body of toxins. All spa treatments are optional, and you can pick and choose which ones you want to receive. Detox retreats, like ours, also offer other spa treatments you can add to your retreat schedule.
Additional activities
When you go on a detox retreat, you are deciding to put your health first. Everything is optional, from your spa treatments to your meals and the activities you engage in. There may be moments when you want to skip your yoga session and enjoy an extra massage. Other times, you will be full of energy and want to engage in additional activities, such as a hike, surf, bike ride, snorkel, or even a horseback ride.
