When the Body Speaks: What Happens When We Finally Slow Down
“The body keeps the score. If the memory of trauma is encoded in the viscera, in heartbreaking and gut-wrenching emotions, we need to find ways to release them.”
Dr. Bessel van der Kolk

You’re Not Lacking Motivation: You’re Holding Too Much
Having met thousands of women who have come to our retreats there is a commonality I see – so many of us are carrying so much. Work. Family. Responsibility. A to-do list that never ends.
We’re praised for our hustle where being productive, independent and efficient are rewarded. It’s as if stillness and rest can feel like a guilty pleasure. No one really teaches us how to slow down. How to ask for help. How to feel safe doing nothing. We are always on and are wired to be.
And eventually, the body starts to speak. I know this first hand.
What We Store in Stillness
This is something we witness often on retreat, especially during restorative or yin yoga. A woman will be lying in a hip-opening pose, eyes closed, seemingly peaceful—and then the tears come. Quietly, unexpectedly.
She’ll sit up after class and say, “I don’t know why I’m crying. I wasn’t even thinking about anything.”
But her body knew.
What we have seen for many years on retreat is that when we finally stop—when we breathe, soften, and create space—unprocessed emotion rises to the surface. Grief. Stress. Fear. Things we didn’t even realise we were holding. We wonder ‘How much energy have we been using carrying around this unwanted ‘weight”?

Emotions Aren’t Just in the Mind
We tend to think healing is about figuring things out in our head. But true healing happens in the body.
We store tension in our muscles, in our gut, in our shoulders and hips. We hold stress in our breath. Our nervous system stays on high alert, long after the pressure has passed.
That’s why we are so passionate about lifestyle interventions and rituals on retreat that you can take home to help.
We know until we pause, those sensations stay trapped. Lingering. Quietly affecting our energy, our sleep, our ability to feel joy.
This Is Why the Body Weeps on Retreat
At Escape Haven, we often see guests surprised by the emotions that come up—especially during the slower, quieter moments.
That long exhale in a yin class.
The stillness of a guided meditation.
The peace of a spa treatment where our body finally gets to surrender.
The softness of being held in a safe, nurturing space.
Your body finally feels safe enough to let go. Your head stops leading and your body takes over. It’s a really powerful shift when this happens and when you know you have officially slipped into retreat mode and know how different you rapidly start to feel. Light, free and happy.

Healing Isn’t Always Loud
Most of us think transformation looks like big change, big action. But some of the most powerful healing happens in stillness. In softening. In being deeply seen and held.
It’s not just the yoga, spa treatments, workshops or the wellness rituals on retreat that shifts things—it’s also the people around you.
The woman next to you who says, “Me too.”
The gentle voice of a teacher guiding you home to yourself.
The quiet realisation that you’re not broken—you’re just tired.
Your Body Is Asking for Rest, Not Resistance
If you’ve felt a bit brittle lately—emotionally snappy, physically exhausted, or just flat—you’re not alone.
What you’re feeling is something we refer to on retreat as a wee whisper from your body.
A sign that you’re ready to soften. To let go. To heal before the inevitable burnout.
And when you give yourself permission to stop… your body will thank you and you will feel that childlike lightness that comes from unburdening yourself.

This Is Your Invitation to Exhale
You don’t need to fix everything. You don’t need to earn rest.
You simply need to return to yourself.
At Escape Haven, we don’t just offer yoga classes and smoothies. We offer a space where women feel safe enough to release. To be held. To feel again..
“Connection is why we’re here. It’s what gives purpose and meaning to our lives.”
Brené Brown Tweet

Whether it’s through breath, movement, stillness, or shared stories—healing begins when we feel safe enough to feel.
You’re not alone—and you’re more whole than you realise.
