Redefining Midlife: Why Menopause Is a Beginning, Not an Ending

Each year, October 18 marks World Menopause Day. We believe its important to honour this day as an opportunity to change the narrative around it. To shift how we see this chapter of life and how we talk about it. On retreat women tell us often how menopause has been spoken about in whispers or endured in silence. At Escape Haven, we believe it deserves a different story – one of empowerment, vitality, and deep self-care. It’s why we launched this programme that has become SO popular.
In the video below you’ll hear our Menopause Retreat Facilitator, Ailise, reminding us that while menopause begins as a physical transition, its impact reaches far beyond hormones. It touches every corner of a woman’s life – emotional, spiritual, relational, and physical. That’s why, on retreat, we approach it holistically. There is no one size fits all. Women come not only to rest, but to reconnect with their strength, their joy, and their bodies and to learn lifestyle interventions that they can take home. Ones that help them live better and more joyfully as there is no need to suffer.
“Menopause is a time to thrive, not survive,” Ailise says in her talk. “Small lifestyle shifts can create powerful changes.” At Escape Haven, women are guided through those shifts – from nutrition and exercise to sleep and stress care – supported by expert practitioners and surrounded by a community that understands. The relief that comes from women on retreat with these shared experiences is a big part of the programme.

Food as medicine, movement as power
Nutrition is one of the simplest but impactful ways to support yourself through menopause. During the retreat, guests enjoy high-protein, whole-food meals designed to balance hormones and stabilise energy. Sugar and processed carbs are heavily reduced. Fresh ingredients, mindful cooking, and meals made with love become the new norm – and guests often take these habits home.
Movement, too, is essential. “This is the season of life where we future-proof our bodies,” Ailise explains. Strength training becomes a tool for longevity – protecting against muscle loss, bone density decline, and injury. At retreat, you’ll work with a personal trainer or Pilates coach to create a plan that supports your unique stage of life.
Rest, recovery, and community
Menopause can make women more sensitive to stress and more in need of restorative rest. Our retreat is intentionally designed to slow the pace. Between workshops and classes, guests enjoy ample downtime, daily massages, and moments of stillness by the pool. All of this forms essential recovery.
Perhaps one of the most healing parts of the experience is connection. For many women, menopause can feel isolating. At Escape Haven, you are surrounded by like-minded women who understand, who listen, and who share openly. Conversations that might never happen at home unfold easily here. Tears, laughter, and relief often blend together – and lasting friendships are born.
