Haunting Your Own Life? Time to Ghost Stress

A gentle reminder to step out of autopilot and return to yourself

Have you ever felt like you’re living ‘ground hog day’? The same day, every day? You wake up tired, rush and push through, then fall into bed already exhausted in the evening. It’s like being haunted by your own routine on repeat! (I know I have) You’re here, but not really here. Life becomes something you manage rather than something you feel.

Most of us don’t realise when we slip into that state. We carry on carrying on! We keep showing up and on the outside everything looks fine. But inside…. the nervous system is stuck in “on mode,” and eventually we begin to lose touch with ourself (and those around us).

Spotting the Haunting

Stress doesn’t always look dramatic. More often, it hides in the quiet corners of our behaviour:

  • Snapping at tiny things
  • Waking up tired even after sleep
  • Feeling “busy” but rarely fulfilled
  • Losing joy in the things that used to light us up
  • Needing noise or social scrolling for distraction because stillness feels foreign

That’s what it feels like to haunt your own life – present in body, absent in spirit.

When I Realised I Was Haunted By My Own Stress

The first time I came to Bali (many moons ago), I realised I had been living this way for a long time without noticing. I thought I was just “high functioning” and resilient and was kind of proud at how much I could juggle. But my fight or flight system was constantly activated. I couldn’t even read simple signals from my own body – was I thirsty, tired, hungry, wired, overwhelmed? I stopped noticing.

Everything looked polished on the outside, but inside my gloss had kind of dulled. I couldn’t sleep properly, I never fully exhaled, and I had forgotten what it felt like to actually feel well.

It wasn’t until checked myself into this yoga resort in Ubud that I truly slowed down. Through doing so, I started to remember what presence felt like. After a meditation and yoga session one morning, my nervous system dropped out of my head and back into my body. It was the first time in years I felt myself again. Not because I was ‘achieving’ anything. Rather, just by being.

That moment changed everything for me – not instantly, but directionally. It set me on a new course as I realised how much of my life and happiness I’d been trading for the wrong things. It is also why I eventually created Escape Haven, so other women could have the space I didn’t know I needed until my body finally got quiet enough to speak.

Ghosting Stress (The Healthy Way)

Ghosting stress isn’t about disappearing from your life. It’s about returning to it and managing all the holes in your bucket before you burnout.

You ghost stress when you:

  • Set boundaries without apology – a hard one for people pleasers, I know!
  • Take micro-pauses instead of pushing through – the ultimate tank fillers
  • Breathe before reacting – having that space to consider things is a game changer.
  • Move your body to shift emotional weight -we shift out of the monkey mind when we do this.
  • Choose joy over perfection

You don’t need to earn rest through doing it all. You only need to give yourself permission to receive it.

The Retreat Effect

When you remove the noise – the notification pings, the expectations, all the endless doing – your system recalibrates. You remember that you are not meant to sprint through life. In stillness, you don’t lose drive – you recover the energy that fuels it. It sparks your creativity and possibility thinking. It certainly did that for me on that holiday!

Sometimes you don’t need a new life. You just need space to feel the one you already have.

If your nervous system has been whispering for pause, let this be your wee reminder: you are allowed to rest, to reset, and to return to yourself – fully.

If you’d like a safe space to do so, feel free to explore our luxury retreats Bali and reach out to our team here. We’d love to help you do the same.
