Why willpower isn’t the answer – and what works instead

For a long time, I believed that change came down to discipline. Trying harder, being more consistent, and getting it ‘right’. But over time, I realised something else was having a much bigger impact. As I began to shift how I saw myself, I also started changing what was around me.
The food in my home. What I reached for. What I made visible. What felt easy and what didn’t. And those small changes made everything easier. I realised environment shapes behaviour more than we often realise. When something is in front of you, simple, and easy to access, you’re far more likely to do it.
The problem is when everything relies on willpower alone, it becomes much harder to sustain. Willpower is a limited source. That’s why change so often feels easier on retreat. The environment is working with you not against you. There is no friction. The meals are nourishing, the schedule supports you.The cues around you point you back to what you need. You’re not relying on motivation every five minutes. You’re being supported by what’s around you.

Todays prompt
What in your current environment is supporting you?
And what is making things harder than they need to be?
Reflection
The most powerful change isn’t about becoming more disciplined. It’s about creating an environment that makes the version of you that you want to become feel easier to return to.
And that happens so naturally on retreat.
