Private sessions & real results

Your Bali Pilates retreat offers a combination of small group mat classes, semi private reformer classes and one private one on one class with the lead Pilates instructor. The variety allows you to experience the full range of Pilates classes and exercises in a safe, supportive and inspiring environment. The spacious air-conditioned studio offers floor to ceiling mirrors, an extensive range of high quality equipment and all the little touches that make your sessions that much more enjoyable; cold scented towels, hot ginger tea and lovely change rooms with environmentally-friendly shower and body products.

Mat vs. Reformer – what’s the difference?

Our luxury Bali Pilates retreat offers a combination of mat and reformer Pilates classes that allow you to experience the full range of Pilates movements, exercises and benefits. You may be wondering what these classes exactly entail and what sets them apart?

Mat Pilates, as the name suggests, is done on a mat, much like a regular yoga mat. Mat classes consist of body-weight exercises that are performed low to the ground and involve smooth, fluid movements that are easy on the joints, making them suitable for almost anyone of any age or health status.
Mat Pilates training is essentially the foundation of Pilates. Most beginners will start with mat classes in order to build strength, flexibility, and posture. By building a foundation with mat Pilates, you teach your body how to control your muscles and move in a way that is safe and effective.

Reformer Pilates are exercises that are performed on a special Pilates reformer machine that uses springs, gears, straps and ropes to provide resistance. Many of the exercises on the reformer are the same as mat exercises, but performed against this added resistance and with props that ensure the movements are precise and catered specifically to your unique body.

The main difference between beginner mat classes and the reformer classes is this resistance factor. Each part of the reformer can be adjusted for more or less resistance and allows for more modifications than mat Pilates.
Due to the technical nature of Reformer Pilates, it is a good idea to have a private one on one session with a qualified instructor to ensure you are using the machine and props effectively and with the greatest benefit. This is one of the reasons a private class is included in our Bali Pilates retreat package- you are sure to get great results and also have the tolls and knowledge needed to continue with your classes back home in any Pilates environment.

When it comes to mat and reformer classes, neither one is better than the other. Mat training provides a foundation for learning to control your muscles while reformer classes add resistance to improve strength. A combination of the two is ideal as it will give you well-rounded strength and agility.
